The Levantine Janissary is a Levantine/Human enemy and a Boss encountered in the Catacombs. The honorable Janissary accompanies the Levantine Army, sent forth by the Vizier to secure and seize lost technology and knowledge, left behind by the Kvarotz.

The Janissary is a man of very tall stature, wearing a sharp, metallic mask and a long, silk headscarf which extends down to his feet. His clothing is embellished with various patterns and shiny accessories. On his right arm, he carries a firearm known as a jezail pointed upwards, and wields a shamshir on his left.

Helm: The Janissary

This is not a man of villainy, nor a man of machinations. He is a man of honor; of dignity. The conquest on this valley is not his calling, not his purpose. Nonetheless, he stands steadfast between us and the Reliquary. Grant this Janissary a noble death.

~ The Captain

Behaviour

The Janissary has a special gimmick, he has 90 Dodge but will mark one of your heroes to duel with To The Death Preventing them from being guarded but granting them +80 ACC against him. He cannot use this on the same hero twice in a row.

On the first turn of combat he will always use Keep Them Busy which spawns slightly altered versions of Veteran Levantine enemies. If the amount of alive enemies falls to 2 he will use it again on the next turn.

Using Duelist's Surge and Direct Hit the Janissary will cycle between ranks 2 & 3 if not moved through skills or other enemy deaths, with Direct Hit being the more dangerous of the two.

Strategy

The best way to defeat the Janissary is with Riposte, for this its best to bring Man-at-Arms with Command allowing the duel target to riposte regardless of their own skills.

Another strategy is to just bring heroes with powerful single target damage like Bounty Hunter and quickly kill him with burst damage.

Its also possible with ACC buffs and DODGE debuffs to allow all heroes to attack him with a decent chance, Vestal's Riposte / Occultist's Vulnerability Hex / Jester's Battle Ballad are all good options for this.

Team Selection

Recommended

  • Man-at-Arms - An excellent choice due to being able to activate riposte on any hero, drawing aggro with Retribution and reducing enemy party DODGE and SPD with Bellow allowing for more hits on and outspeed of the Janissary.
  • Hellion - High damage with skills to attack every rank, she can devastate the Janissary if selected as the duel target.
  • Highwayman - High base riposte stats and Duelist's Advance buffs allow for large amounts of extra damage on top of already high base damage if selected as the duel target. Be careful with his health though, he can quickly be brought to deaths door.
  • Vestal - With strong healing especially for religious teams, high base health, a stun skill and the previously mentioned DODGE decreasing riposte. Vestal is a good choice when combined with Command Man-at-Arms.
  • Occultist - High and consistent single target healing can keep the duel target alive. Vulnerability Hex can reduce the Janissaries DODGE by up to 17 depending on its level and Amber Curse is a great attack against any enemy with multiple actions.
  • Jester - With Battle Ballad for a full party CRIT/ACC/SPD buff along with the immense potential damage of Finale, Jester is invaluable during this fight. Just beware that he won't fare well if selected to duel.

Reasonable Choices

  • Crusader - Can struggle to hit the Janissary due to his low speed but makes up for this somewhat with his high base health, PROT buffs, Health/Stress healing and expiate skill. Its best to use Crusader to kill the basic Levantine enemies and tank, attacking the boss when possible, unless you have a hero with pull to back him up.

Discouraged Heroes

  • Antiquarian - Likely to die if she gets marked by the Janissary, due to high accuracy attacks and not being able to force guard. Her damage is mediocre but Scavenge can be used to make a large amount of money if you accept or can mitigate the risk. Her buffs and debuffs can also be helpful but still very risky to use her in the fight.

Trophy

After completing the Levantine Janissary's quest, he will drop his mask and blade as spoils of the Reliquary.
